"MORE FOOD IS WASTED IN THE WORLD THAN ALL
HUNGRY PEOPLE COULD CONSUME"
It refers to its
decline in the successive stages of the food supply chain intended for human
consumption. Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial
production to final household consumption.
Lately,
different solutions that try to address the problem of food waste have sounded
strongly. Faced with the evidence that large supermarkets have to throw in huge
amounts of food every day, while a part of the population does not have access
to staple foods, new brands, if not the same ones, offer a solution.
Should supermarkets donate their products before
they expire? Yes, if a
supermarket or other food trade ends up having surpluses of products that are going
to expire, they should donate them so that people can consume them rather than
squander them. This practice is much more widespread in the US than in Spain
and the rest of Europe. And it is time for us - the consumers - to require food
businesses to donate their surplus rather than throw it away.
To conclude, one
should be aware of everything that wasted, the food we do not eat and that in
the future will hurt us. We must learn to consume everything that is within our
reach and what is necessary and useful.
